1)  Using animals as research tools to explain human behavior

Two of the most salient characteristics of behavioral approach are the heavy reliance on animal subjects and the emphasis on external events (environmental stimuli and overt behaviors) and a corresponding reluctance to spectaculate about processes inside the organism. (Mazur, J.E, 1994)

There has been a few arguments considering the advantages and disadvantages of using animals as research tool. Among the advantages are the possibility of placebo effect or expectancy effect reduced, and animals are subjects that are easy and inexpensive to take care of.

Criticisms to the usage of animals as subjects is because animals are creatures that lack of many important skills such as use of language, reading and solving complex problems. It is not acceptable for us to generalize human behaviors from animals. In addition, ethical issue is that animals should be treated equally like human beings and any pain or discomfort to animals must be minimized to the least extent possible.

2) Islamic and psychological perspective of punishment in behaviorism theory of learning

One of problems discussed in one of behaviorism theory of punishment in learning is person delivering the punishment could become a discriminative stimuli for punishment, with the result that the unwanted behavior is suppressed only when that person is present.  (Symbaluk, D. G., Honey, P. L., & Powell, R. A, 2017, pg. 353)

We would like to give our analytical analysis to this problem mentioned above, using our own example, which is educating five daily prayers.

There is a popular hadith on this matter among Muslim community in Malaysia, that is narrated by Abu Dawood(459) and Ahmad (6650):

‘Amr ibn Shu’ayb narrated from his father that his grandfather said: “The Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h.) said: “Teach your children to pray when they are seven years old, and beat them (lightly) if they do not pray when they are 10 years old, and separate them in their beds.

From this hadith, we attempt to interpret and understand the hadith from behaviorism theory in learning. We explain our analysis of this problem in punishment, in chronological as follows:

  1. There is duration about three years (from 7 to 10 years old) for parents to educate their children about performing five daily prayers, according to this hadith.
  2. If they follow it literally, they have to start teaching their children about five daily prayers when they reach 7 years old.
  3. If they remind and ask their children to perform prayer almost every single day in the period of that three years, then their children should at least understand why they have to do that, because the parents takes it so seriously.
  4. Some parents tend to beat their children when they refuse to perform it after they reach 10 years old, even though they did not take it seriously during last three years (since their children are 7 years old).
  5. Hence, children who are in this kind of situation has tendency to suppress their behavior (not performing prayer) only when their parents (or one of them) ask them whether they have done it or not. However, they will not perform it when their parents are not around.

Katakan tidak pada pseudo-psychology!

Semua orang harapkan benda yang asli.
Semua orang dambakan produk yang ori.
Semua orang tak inginkan barang tiruan.
Semua orang tak mahu ikut kesesatan…

Betapa sedihnya ahli-ahli hadith apabila hadith palsu dianggap riwayat yang thabit daripada Nabi Muhammad Sollallahu ‘alaihi wasallam.

Betapa sedihnya para saintis apabila nasihat kesihatan palsu dianggap fakta sains.

The Village: Achiara’s Secret

Posted in Cetusan Pemikiran on 6 December 2015 by Ahmad Kamil

It has been a while since my previous blog post.  Nah, I believe this is the first time I write this kind of posts. I would like to recommend this for those who like to watch Korean dramas. I am indeed not one of them, but I have watched it. It seems rare compared to other dramas.

I have posted this on my Facebook’s wall. It is something about precious lesson that we could reflect on ourselves:

When the mind is not strong enough to recover from a trauma after being victim of crime(s)/incident(s), it could just go very wrong to the extent of “insanity”. Such “insanity” sometimes only surfaces when severely provoked and the affected could appear normal on a daily basis.

All in all, before one decides to go ahead with a mistake, he/she has to think again. A mistake may not just affect one person, it could affect more people in community and typically people’s lives are intertwined if closely related.

If one never recovers from being the receiving end of a mistake, likely that person will go on to make mistakes and the mistakes cycle starts again. In other words, the suffering and the pain are never ending, besides more and more people are affected. There will be more variety of reactions, resulting a complicated situation to be judged.

It is like telling lies. One lie will lead to another to cover the previous lie, and so on and so forth, so it will be never ending and snowball into something unmanageable.

I would like to say a few words more in addition to the above.

People usually complaint about injustice in dramas since villains and culprits are free from trials and justice. When watching this drama, it comes across my mind that it is indeed the reality in our lives. Isn’t it?

The writer is like to tell us to wake up and realize not to expect perfection of stories, just like the truth of this worldly life. We have to admit that besides stories we know about something, there are actually more out of our knowledge.

In a nutshell, let me share a quote so that we can think of more: “If you would you like to feel about being god, then write novels/stories

Thanks a zillion for reading. I welcome your thoughts as well.

Islam, negara dan keadilan

Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taimiyah rahimahullah (wafat 728H) berkata dalam kitabnya, Majmu’ al Fatawa:

Posted in Cetusan Pemikiran on 5 February 2015 by Ahmad Kamil

Sidang Dewan Undangan Negeri Panas!

Posted in Cetusan Pemikiran on 22 July 2014 by Ahmad Kamil

YAB Iman: Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim.
